Citrus-Herb Green Smoothie

This smoothie was inspired from a sample I had at Costco one day. A blender “event” was going on and the Blender sales guy made a basil-limeade smoothie. I loved the basil and lime together, but wanted to make it without any sugar, so I used orange juice which is naturally sweeter, with a little lime juice to keep that fresh flavor. I tried adding some peppermint one time when I didn’t have much basil, and liked the combination. This is such a refreshing flavor. I love starting my day with this.

Ingredients

2 cups Water
2 Oranges (peeled)
1/3 – 1/2 can Orange Juice concentrate
4-5 whole Basil Leaves
5-8 whole Peppermint Leaves
3 cups Spinach or other greens
1 whole Lime Juiced
1 cup Ice Cubes

Preparation

Add ingredients to blender in order listed, blend and enjoy!

    I really like the idea of new flavors like the mint and basil. Do you have any suggestions for growing your own herbs? Especially in the winter? I’d love to grow some in my kitchen!

      Mmmm, fresh basil, is there anything better? I love the idea of growing herbs indoors. I have some trying to grow in my sunroom. I just keep forgetting to water them. 🙂 I think the kitchen may work better, since I’d walk past them more often. A full spectrum flourescent light would help them grow more in the winter. My friend has had good luck with this using a cheap light fixture (from Home Depot) that fits the full spectrum bulb (though it’s more of a tube). You can buy the bulb online or at garden centers and it is probably more expensive than the fixture. Misting the plants and having some sort of a vent or fan circulating the air are supposed to help also. I haven’t gotten that far into this. Let me know how it goes!
